One of last week's pieces suggested that Law School has become a bad investment, but one also reads that undergraduate education in general, and the Humanities in particular, is now pointless. Three of the attached pieces, by (Humanities Professor and skeptic) Stanley Fish, focus on this: how to justify public funding of post-secondary education in the Humanities. Article 1, Article 2, Article 3. The same question can be asked about (to take a random example) a social science like Economics, however, and the fourth piece suggests the reason women avoid the Sciences is that they're smart enough to realize that, as a career goal, it sucks.
